George Denton

July 3, 1925 — July 3, 2016

George "Lester" Denton, 91, of Oakland went to be with the Lord on Sunday, July 3, 2016, at his home. Born on July 3, 1925 in Broomes Island, he was the son of the late John Henry and Nola Belle (Dove) Denton. He was a proud veteran of the United States Army having served in World War II and earned many commendations including the Bronze Star. Prior to his retirement, he worked as a foreman in the construction business and had also been an oysterman and truck driver in his earlier years. He was a faithful member of the Grace Reformed Church and was a member of the High Point of Maryland. In addition to spending time with family and friends, he enjoyed antiques, hunting, fishing, oystering, gardening and woodworking. He is survived by his loving wife, Sandra Lee (Dunithan) Denton; five children, Linda Denton of Baltimore, Sandra Armstrong and husband Gary of West Yarmouth, MA, Cheryl Funk Sands and husband Richard of Freeland, MD, Robin Denton McCoy of DesMoines, IA, and Sheila Nicholson and husband Gregory of Leesburg, VA; two stepdaughters, Marcy Mattern of Watertown, SD and Wendy Carl and husband Brian of Red Lion, PA; grandchildren, Justin Kaminski and wife Ashley, Alisa Luciano and husband Nathan, Jesse Funk, Stephen McCoy, Christopher McCoy, Tyler Funk, Lauren McCoy, Teague Nicholson, Meghan McCoy, MacCallan Nicholson, Garrett Carl, Alison Carl, Will Mattern and Mackenzie Mattern; great grandchildren, Liran, Ava, Emme, Lachlan and Max; and a number of nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his siblings, Edward Denton, John Denton and Frances Denton Fabricante. Friends will be received at the C & S Fredlock Funeral Home, P.A., 21 N 2nd St., Oakland on Tuesday, July 5th from 6 to 8 PM and on Wednesday, July 6th from 9 to 10 AM after which time a funeral service will be held with Pastor Robert Bonser officiating. Interment, with military honors, will follow in the Pleasant Valley Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice of Garrett County, PO Box 271, Oakland, MD 21550.
