George Elzie Brady, Jr., 88, of Kitzmiller passed away peacefully on Thursday, February 28, 2019, at the Oakland Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, surrounded by his family. Born on November 11, 1930, in Shallmar, MD, he was the son of the late Elzie and Melissa (Spiker) Brady. He was a veteran who served in the 82nd Airborne, 508th Regimental Combat Unit. He used the GI Bill to attend Potomac State College and West Virginia University, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in geology. George returned to Garrett County to raise his family. He was retired from the Garrett County Board of Education, where he worked as Superintendent of Maintenance. While there, he ran the Neighborhood Youth Corps, which hired many of the young people in the county for summer work. He also served on the Garrett Planning Commission for many years. George was a charter member of the Southern Garrett County Rescue Squad. After retiring, he continued to respond to calls with the Kitzmiller Fire Department. As a young man, he loved to play baseball as a pitcher for the Shallmar, Maryland team. Later on, he helped coach the Oakland Oaks of the Pen-Mar League for over 25 years. He was inducted into the Maryland Semi Pro Baseball Hall of Fame. He instilled his passion for baseball in his children and grandchildren. George was an avid poker player and never missed a card tournament. He loved to garden, fish, hunt and trap. He played the piano and loved to listen to classical music. He was well-read and acquired a small library in his home. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Elsie “Jackie” (Burrell) Brady; brother, Robert “Bob Dale” Brady; his son, Mike Brady and wife Nancy of Kitzmiller; daughters, Debbie Brady-Mahe and husband Pat of Morgantown, WV, Melissa Rohrbaugh and husband Scott of Oakland and Addie Glotfelty and husband Warren of McHenry. The Brady Bunch includes twelve grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, James, and sister, Caroline Lake. Friends will be received at the C & S Fredlock Funeral Home, P.A., 710 Church St., Kitzmiller, on Monday, March 4thfrom 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 PM. A funeral service will be held in the funeral home on Tuesday, March 5that 11 AM with Rev. Matthew Paugh officiating. Interment, with military honors, will follow in the IOOF Cemetery, Elk Garden, WV. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Southern Garrett County Rescue Squad, 200 Baltimore Ave, Oakland, MD 21550 or Hospice of Garrett County, PO Box 271, Oakland, MD 21550.
