Fredrick (Fred) Wallace Tichnell, 90, of Mt. Lake Park passed away peacefully surrounded by family on Friday, October 28, 2011 at Dennett Road Manor Nursing Home.Born May 28, 1921 in Shallmar, MD, he was the son of Arthur S. and Kathleen (Junkins) Tichnell. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Johnny, Arthur Jr., and Kenneth Tichnell

Mr. Tichnell is survived by his wife of 69 years, Vera B. Welch, the love of his life.He was the father of seven children; Susan Colaw of Petersburg, WV, Gary Tichnell and wife Kathy of Pasadena, MD, Linda Margraff and husband Edward of Accident, Fred Tichnell and wife Jean of Falling Waters, WV, Robin Smith and husband Denzil of Oakland, Marsha Todd Bosley and husband Craig of Aurora, WV, and Dawn Panther and husband Ed of Oakland. Grandchildren include: Timothy Colaw, Todd Eric Colaw, Erika Hodziewich, Melissa L. Margraff, Aimee McFarland, Ronnie and Dustin Smith, Ary Snyder, Josh Bosley, Julia Simmons, Nathaniel and Chad Panther; great grandchildren: Stephanie Harmon, Colin and Kyle McFarland, Misty Lewis, Ronnie Smith, Jr., Trentin Snyder, Brooklyn Simmons, McNeeley Bosley; great great grandchildren: Austin Harmon and Xander Lewis; one brother, Bobby Dale Tichnell and wife Joann of Frederick; also several nieces and nephews.

Fred was a veteran, serving in the US Air Force, in the 384th Bomb Group, 6th Material Squadron, Graffton Underwood, England.He later served in the European theater.

He was a retired US Postal employee, having served 38 years in the Oakland Post Office.

A man of many trades, he was known for his work at local theaters, Director of Civil Defense, Civil Air Patrol and community services; Fred helped at the Minnich Funeral Home and ran a teen club at the Armory.As a young man, he played saxophone and clarinet in Mickey's Boys Band and also local dance bands.He also taught local youngsters to play musical instruments. He was an avid wood worker and clock maker.

He was a member of St. Mark's Lutheran Church in Oakland, a lifetime member of the Deer Park VFW, and Proctor-Kildow American Legion.

At his request he will be cremated and a celebration of Fred's life will be held on Saturday, November 19, 2011 at the David A. Burdock Funeral Home, 21 N 2nd St., Oakland, MD.The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 10 to 11 AM at which time a memorial service will be conducted.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Garrett County Animal Shelter.
