Frederick Karl Learey, 78, of Mtn. Lake Park died on Sunday, January 18, 2015 at the Oakland Nursing and Rehabilitation Center with his wife, Nancy, by his side. Born on February 19, 1936 in Ironton, Ohio, he was the son of the late Frederick and Marian (VanValkenburgh) Learey. Fred attended Andover Newton Seminary in Boston and was a graduate of Ohio Wesleyan University and Frostburg State University, where he obtained his MBA. He later taught at both Frostburg State and Garrett College, where he was a member of the Garrett College Foundation board. He was a member of St. Matthew's Episcopal Church and, in earlier days, served as a youth minister in Ohio. He touched uncountable lives as the Director of Camp Minnetoska in Oakland for 20 years. Community involvement was important to Fred and he served on the Mtn. Lake Park Town Council. Fred had a passion for music, with a special interest in barbershop quartets, and was a very active member of the Garrett Choral Society. In addition to spending time with his family and friends, Fred enjoyed traveling, reading, playing bridge and tending his garden, particularly his orchids. He is survived by his loving wife of 34 years, Nancy K. (Kemmerer) Learey; a daughter, Chloe Learey of Vermont; a son, Frederick Learey of Allentown, PA; four grandchildren, Anna, Isabel, Cayden and Grace; and a brother, Richard Learey and wife Susie of Venice, FL. According to Fred's wishes, he was cremated and a memorial service will be held in St. Matthew's Episcopal Church, 126 E. Liberty St., Oakland on Saturday, January 31st at 11 AM. Interment will be in the Oakland Cemetery at a future date. Memorial donations may be made to Hospice of Garrett County, PO Box 271, Oakland, MD 21550 or Southern Rescue Squad, PO Box 378, Oakland, MD 21550. The Burdock-Fredlock Funeral Home, P.A., Oakland is assisting the family with arrangements.
