Frances R. Meese, 88, of Oakland died Thursday, September 15, 2011 at Oakland Nursing & Rehab Center of Oakland, MD. Frances was born February 26, 1923 in Martinsburg, WV, the daughter of the late William and Dora Frances Florence.
Mrs. Meese was a member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church since 1946 and was active in all parts of the church. She served as President of the United Methodist Women for 8 years, served on the trustee's committee, council board, and many other committees. She was a member of Civic Club, a member of the historical society, helped in community work, and worked for the Garrett County Board of Elections for 50 years. In 1988, Mrs. Meese was appointed Chairman of South Garrett County Area of the American Cancer Society.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, William W. Close; one son, James Frances Close; one sister and four brothers; and her second husband, Wade W. Meese. She is survived by a son: David W. Close of Riner, VA; a grandson, Scott W. Close and wife Jackie of New Haven, IN; and three great grandchildren, Alex, Natalie, and Ben Close.
Friends will be received on Friday from 2 to 4 & 6 to 8 PM at St. Paul's United Methodist Church, 318 E. Oak St., Oakland, MD where a funeral service will be held on Saturday at 2 PM with Rev. Jennifer Johns-Gooding officiating. Interment will be in Hillcrest Cemetery, Cumberland, MD.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Paul's United Methodist Church, 318 East Oak St., Oakland, MD 21550.
