Eugene Smith

December 27, 1923 — August 24, 1011

Mr. Eugene "Pappy" Smith, 87, Frostburg, formerly of Crellin and Swanton, passed away peacefully surrounded by his children, on Wednesday, August 24, 1011, at the Frostburg Village Nursing Home.

Born December 27, 1923 in Frostburg, he was the son of the late William and Christina (Walker) Smith. He was preceded in death by his first wife of 48 years, Christine Marie (McCloud) Smith, and three sons, Roger Smith, Eugene Smith, Jr., and George Smith. He was the last surviving child of William and Christina Smith.

Mr. Smith served in the 87th Batallion Seabees from 1943-45. Upon his return from the Navy, he married Christine McCloud, and together they had six children. Mr. Smith worked in the coal mines, retiring in 1979 from Reliable Coal in Kingwood, WV. After his retirement, he took up woodworking, and took great pride in his many works, including cedar hope chests, wishing wells, gun cabinets and many other unique items. He became quite well known for his craftsmanship. He enjoyed watching and talking about sports, namely football.

Surviving are his second wife, Catherine Alberta (Hare-Wilt) Smith, Frostburg; his children, Sylvia May Guthrie and husband Marvin, Mt. Lake Park, Timothy Smith and wife Sharon, Pleasant Valley, Gerald Owen Smith and wife Patricia, Swanton; sixteen grandchildren: Quintin, Norman and Dino Guthrie, Sonya Hinebaugh, Christie Guthrie, Tammy Smith, Rebecca Anderson, Jeffrey Smith, Connie Shugars, Shawn and William Smith, Shannon Baker, Adam and Gregory Smith, Melissa Bittinger, Jennifer Smith; 35 great grandchildren and six great-great grandchildren.

Pap was a very special man. All who knew him adopted him as their "pap". He was a very devoted husband, father, and grandfather, and he will be sorely missed. The family would like to thank the passionate staff at the Frostburg Village Nursing Home for the tremendous care they gave Pap in his final days.

Family and friends will be received at the David A. Burdock Funeral Home, P.A., 21 N. 2nd St, Oakland, MD, Friday, August 26, 2011 from 6-8 p.m. and Saturday, August 27, 2011 from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday, August 28, 2011 at the Blaine Full Gospel Church with the Rev. Dewayne Frederick officiating.

Interment will be in the Kalbaugh Cemetery.
