Esther “Gale” Bernard, 63, of Friendsville, passed away on Thursday, August 6, 2020 at her home surrounded by her loved ones. Born on May 13, 1957 in Baltimore, she was the daughter of the late Gilbert and Lovenna Neal. Gale was a graduate of Howard High School, Class of 1974. She was employed by Slope Side Market as a cashier. Gale was very good with her hands and enjoyed crafting. She loved the feeling of sand between her toes and the sunshine on her cheeks. Most of all, she loved her family, friends and God. Gale was a member of Oak Grove Church of the Brethren in Mc Henry.

Gale is survived by her husband of 47 years, Clyde Bernard; a daughter, Charissa Hankins and husband Josh Gilpin of Grantsville; a son, Clyde K. “C.J.” Bernard, Jr. of Friendsville; grandchildren, Shelby Hankins of Grantsville, PSC Anthony Hankins, Jr. stationed in Polk, LA, Cheyanne Bernard and Cameron Bernard; a step-granddaughter, Kaylee Gilpin; a great grandson, Hill Lee Hankins; siblings, Regina Iman and husband Bobby of Baltimore, Misty Phillips and husband Tink of Milton, FL, Dale Metz and wife Debbie, Marla Johnson and husband Robert of Newport News, VA; sisters-in-law, Cheryl and Allen Zeichik of Reseda, CA, Nancy Bernard of Mc Henry, and Sandy and Tom Savage of Mc Henry.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Debra Arnold; a niece, Cherl Ann Breeding; an uncle, Terrell Frazee; a mother-in-law, Marjorie Jean Bernard Sales; and two brothers-in-law, Mervin R. “Skip” Bernard and Carroll M. “Butch” Bernard.

In accordance with Gale’s wishes, she will be cremated and her remains will be buried in Oakland Cemetery at a later date.

Memorial contributions may be directed to Cindy’s Fund or to Hospice of Garrett County.

Gale’s family would like to thank Hospice of Garrett County and the staff at WVU Ruby Memorial Hospital for the compassionate care shown to her.
