Elizabeth Starr "Betty" Hesen, 92, of Oakland, Maryland passed away on Friday, March 24, 2023, in Houston, TX.
Born on April 7, 1930, in Oakland, she was preceded in death by her husband, James Hesen; son-in-law, Bobby Vincent; parents, Michael V. and Inez N. (Hamill) Kildow; and older brother Michael Kildow and twin brother William Kildow.
She is survived by her daughters, Nancy Hesen Perkins and Catherine Vincent; son-in-law, Malcolm Perkins; grandchildren, Eric Vincent and his fiancé Sharon Ingebretsen, Kelsey Vincent, Sydney Perkins, Emma Perkins, and Kayley Perkins.
She was a graduate of Oakland High School and went on to receive a bachelor of science in education from Frostburg State University. After teaching for a few years in Long Island, NY and Montgomery County, MD, she returned home to Garrett County and spent the next 30 years teaching English at Southern High School.
Betty loved to read, knit and played bridge in several local area bridge clubs. She could be found for many years selling tickets to Southern High School football, basketball and soccer games and was recognized as the Person of the Year by Southern Garrett Athletic Association for her work. Betty was a volunteer at Garrett Memorial Hospital and delivered Meals on Wheels to local residents. Betty loved the Pittsburgh Steelers, the Houston Astros, Louisiana Softball and college basketball.
She was a member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church and the Maryland Retired Teachers Association.
Most of all Betty loved sitting on her front porch and back deck. She loved spending time with her family, friends and their pets. She was the eternal optimist and always brought out the best in everyone.
A visitation will be held in the C & S Fredlock Funeral Home, Oakland, on Saturday, April 29th from 10 am to 12 pm followed by a memorial service.
