Early on Tuesday morning, October 11, 2016, Earlene Scott Shank Evans, age 89, passed from her earthly body and was received into her heavenly home by her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Born on March 8, 1927, in Kitzmiller, Maryland, to Earl Scot Shank and Mary Rosanna "Mame" Butts Shank, Earlene grew up in Kitzmiller and lived there most of her life. She graduated from Kitzmiller High School in 1943 at age 16. As a young girl, Earlene delivered the Cumberland Evening Times papers throughout Kitzmiller for 3 cents each. While a teenager, she worked as a clerk at the Vindex Company Store and as an usher at the Kitzmiller Theater. During the war, she accepted a job in Baltimore for Western Electric and later worked as a bookkeeper for Harvey and Evans Coal Co. She retired as assistant manager of the Garrett National Bank in Kitzmiller. Mrs. Evans assisted the town clerk in Kitzmiller, worked for the Board of Elections, and was an active community volunteer. Earlene was a member and deaconess in the Kitzmiller Presbyterian Church. After it closed, she attended the Mt. Bethel Methodist Church in Kitzmiller. Upon moving to Maysville, WV, to live with her daughter and son-in-law, she attended the Maysville Brick Church of the Brethren. Mrs. Evans had been an active member in the Daughters of America, P.T.A., past president of the Garrett County Council of P.T.A.'s., Kitzmiller Fire Ladies Auxiliary, member of the Garrett County Historical Society and Democrat Club, and had assisted with activities of the Kitzmiller Lions Club. Upon locating in Maysville, Earlene participated as a volunteer in the Tuesday afternoon hymn sings at Grant Co. Nursing Home where she sang and visited with the residents. Along with her parents, Mrs. Evans was preceded in death by her husband, Chester Lee Evans in 2003, and her three brothers: Howard Earl "Pedro" Shank, William Denton "Bill" Shank, and Harold Elgin "Sonny" Shank. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Surviving are her daughter, Rosanne "Susie" Sherwood and her husband Richard "Dick" of Maysville, WV, and her son, M. Van Evans and wife Mary Lynn of Clear Spring, MD; two grandchildren, Robert Evans and Amy Guessford; and four great-grandchildren, Delaney, Tegan, McKenna, and Brady. Friends and family may call at the C & S Fredlock Funeral Home, P.A., 710 Church Street, Kitzmiller on Friday, October 14, 2016, from 10:30 until noon. Funeral services will be conducted there beginning at 12:00 P.M. with Rev. Matthew Paugh and Pastor Carroll Junkins. Interment will be in the I.O.O.F. Cemetery, Elk Garden, WV.
