Dorothy Nielsen

Dorothy Jean Nielsen, 95, of Oakland died on Saturday, February 15, 2014 at the Dennett Road Manor Nursing Home. She had lived at the Underwood South in Oakland after moving from Port Charlotte, FL following 2004's Hurricane Charley's destruction of her apartment and automobile. Born in Brunswick, NE on July 3, 1918, she was the daughter of the late Frank and Luella (Witwer) Young. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her husband, Donald E. MacArthur; two sons, Dale A. MacArthur who was killed in the Vietnam War at the age of 22 and Darrell MacArthur who was drowned in an irrigation ditch at 2 A½ years of age; two sisters, Doreen Young and Elaine Young Stevens; and a brother, Maurice Young. Her second husband, Alfred Nielsen, also preceded her in death. Mrs. Nielsen is survived by a daughter, Dorene Rogers of Oakland; a son, Douglas Ray MacArthur of Ellensburg, WA; a sister in law, Lois Young of Yakima, WA; two granddaughters, Jonquil Ogden and Juliet West of Morgantown, WV; two great grandsons, Jobey and Sam West, also of Morgantown; three stepdaughters, Ruth Mueller, Jackie Ryan and Marcie Olander, all of WA; and a stepson, Dr. Larry Nielsen of WA. Dorothy worked many years as a sales lady for J.C. Penney in King of Prussia, PA as well as for several bakeries as a cake decorator. Following her retirement, she worked as a demonstrator for various products in Pennsylvania and Florida. She was a member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church in Oakland and the Sew Crafty Ladies of St. Paul's. According to her wishes, Dorothy was cremated and her family will hold a memorial service on a later date. Memorials may be made to the Mary Browning Center, 104 E. Center St., Oakland, MD 21550. The Burdock-Fredlock Funeral Home, P.A., Oakland is assisting the family with arrangements.
