Dorene Nina (MacArthur) Rogers, 71, of Mountain Lake Park, died on Wednesday, March 5, 2014 at Ruby Memorial Hospital, Morgantown surrounded by her family. Born on July 22, 1942 in Ellensburg, WA, she was the daughter of the late Donald E. MacArthur and Dorothy J. (Young) Nielsen. Dorene was a graduate of Sunnyside High School, Class of 1960. She continued her education at Edison Technical School majoring in dentistry and worked as a dental assistant for the next eleven years. Dorene had a love for literature and small children. Over the course of her life, she taught pre-school at several locations including the YMCA in Phoenixville, PA, Chyleen's Two's and Three's in Morgantown, WV, and The Formative Years in Port Charlotte, Fla. When her family settled in West Virginia, Dorene earned a Bachelor of Arts in English Literature from Alderson-Broaddus College in 1988. A few years later, while living in Florida, she attended Edison State College focusing her course work on the foundations of early childhood development with special emphasis on autistic children. She earned a National Diploma in Child Development in 1995. She also spent time volunteering and working in a rare and out-of-print book store, Wolf's Head Book Store, in St Augustine, Fla. In 1996, the Rogers family decided to head back to the hills of West Virginia to settle at Alpine Lake in Terra Alta and Dorene accepted the position of Children's Services Librarian at Ruth Enlow Library in Oakland, MD. "Ms. Dorene", as she was known by the youngest library patrons, touched the lives of thousands of children in Garrett County and the surrounding areas through her love of books and reading. She welcomed families into the library with her calm, graceful manner and captured their imaginations through stories and songs. She retired from her full time position at the library in 2008. She then started her own business, Rogers Book Repair and Restoration, from her home. Throughout her life, Dorene has been very active in her community. She served as a member of the National Board of Education for the American Baptist Churches and also the PEO Sisterhood Organization. Locally, she was a member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church, Oakland and enjoyed singing with the chancel choir. Her special interests included private book collecting, global travel (especially to Scotland), tennis, and gardening.
