Donald Edward "Don" Helbig of Oakland, MD passed away Thursday, October 28, 2010 at Garrett Memorial Hospital six days before his 90th birthday..

Born November 3, 1920 in Oakland, MD, he was the son of the late Edward and Della Florence (Browning) Helbig. Don was also preceded in death by his wife, Margaret L. (Browning) Helbig in 2001; a son, William Michael Helbig in 2006; and older brother, Frederick W. Helbig, MIA pilot WWII in 1045; a younger infant brother Jackie Helbig and his beloved older sister, Mary (Helbig) Michael this past September.

Don was a 1938 graduate of Oakland High School and a Navy Veteran of both WWII and the Korean War. While in the Navy, "Dad" as he was known to shipmates, became life long friends with three other sailors.

A jeweler by trade, in 1947 he founded DE Helbig Jewelers in Oakland. He was also a lifelong sportsman, who enjoyed sport shooting events participating up until his death. He was a member of St. Peter Apostle Catholic Church, American Legion and many other organizations

Surviving are: two sons, Frederick E. Helbig and wife, Beverly and Donald L. "Douge" Helbig and wife, Patty, both of Oakland, MD; Eight grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren and 1 great-great grandchild, as well as several nieces and nephews.

Friends will be received at the David A. Burdock Funeral Home, P.A., 21 N. 2nd Street, Oakland, MD on Friday, October 29, 2010, from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m.

Mass of Christian Burial will be Saturday, October 30, 2010 at 11 a.m. at St. Peter the Apostle Catholic Church, 208 South 4th Street, Oakland, MD.

Interment will be in Garrett County Memorial Gardens.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Louis A. Johnson VA Medical Center, 1 Medical Center Drive, Clarksburg, WV 26301
