Dennis Gene Burke, 63, of Laurel passed away peacefully at his home on Friday, February 22, 2013 with his family by his side after a long battle with cancer. Born on August 29, 1949 in Keyser, WV, he was the son of the late Conrad Whetzel and Amy Nellie (Dixon) Burke. He graduated from Elk Garden High School, Fairmont State College and Frostburg State. At Frostburg he met his wife, Libby. Prior to his retirement from JBS International, where he was a writer, he worked for the American Geophysical Union. In the 1990's, he was founder and senior editor of the Publishing Management Connection. He also worked for the American Society of Microbiology and was formerly an educator in the Mineral County Schools. He was an avid reader as well as a Civil War and WWII buff. He is survived by his daughter, Amy Elizabeth Burke of San Francisco, CA; his brother, Mike Burke and wife Sue of Keyser, WV; and several cousins, nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Elizabeth Ann (Sailer) Burke. Friends will be received at the Burdock-Fredlock Funeral Home, P.A., 710 Church St., Kitzmiller on Monday, February 25th from 6 to 8 PM. A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, February 26th at 11 AM in the Sulphur United Methodist Church with Rev. Chad Kline and Rev. Vickie Minnich officiating. Interment will follow in the Nethken Hill Cemetery, Elk Garden. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, PO Box 22718, Oklahoma City, OK, 73123.
