Delano R. Martin, 89, of Oakland, MD, passed away on September 16, 2022, at Garrett Regional Medical Center in Oakland, MD. Born on February 12, 1933, he was the son of the late Hubert E. and Lola P. (Ramsey) Martin.
Delano was a part of the Oakland High School Class of 1951. This was the first class to have 12 grades. He then married the love of his life, Betty DeWitt, on August 23, 1952.
He began working for Leighton Brothers Buick Dealership in Oakland as a body shop technician. He then rented a garage from Zack Gibson in Crellin and ran his own business there for a short time. After that he worked for Evans Garage in Terra Alta, West Virginia and in 1962 he started to build his own garage on Route 39 in Crellin. He successfully ran Martin Auto Body. At this time he also did contract work, painting barns, schools, other buildings, bridges, and large gas storage tanks. He sold the auto body business to David J. Martin in 1983. Delano then rented a space in the garage and ran an auto glass business for the next five years. Later, he began his journey in real estate working for A and A Reality for a time. He also worked for First United Bank as a courier for approximately 6 years. He began working for real estate company Coldwell Banker and retired from there in 2007. Delano really enjoyed working in the real estate business. He became acquainted with many people during his time as a business owner and a real estate agent.
Delano was a Charter Member of Crellin Assembly of God Church; also participating in the Church Orchestra, playing the trumpet during his active membership. He had a special musical gift, dating back to when he played in the Mountain City Band as a high school student. This band was sponsored by the Oakland Fire Department. He was extremely talented in playing the trumpet and could play by note as well as by "ear". He continued playing his trumpet into his later years. He also enjoyed attending NASCAR races, watching football, creating music with his friends, and most of all, spending time with his family. He very much enjoyed being a husband, father, and grandfather.
He is survived by a daughter, Linda Martin of Mtn. Lake Park, MD; a son, Philip Martin of West Palm Beach, FL; a daughter-in-law, Francis Martin of Oakland, MD; a grandson, Ryan David Martin of Frostburg, MD; and a sister, Sharon Arnold of Oakland, MD.
in addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, Betty L. (DeWitt) Martin; a son, David K. Martin; and a brother, H. Iret Martin.
Friends will be received on Tuesday, September 20, 2022, from 11 AM to 1 PM at C & S Fredlock Funeral Home, P.A. A funeral service will be held at 1 PM in the funeral home with Pastor William Skipper and Pastor Ryan Miller officiating. Interment will follow in the Friend Cemetery.
