Dayton E. Alexander, 86, of Aurora, WV, died on Wednesday, December 19, 2012 at Garrett County Memorial Hospital in Oakland. Born on April 29, 1926 in Turner Douglas, he was the son of the late George W. Alexander and Grace (Bowser) Alexander-Martin. He was a US Army veteran having served in WWII. He retired from the Operating Engineers Union in Clarksburg, WV after having worked as a paver operator. From 1959 to 1967, he was the owner and operator of Date's Truck Stop in Aurora. He was a member of the American Legion Proctor Kildow Post 71 of Oakland for which he had served on the executive committee and as commander, a member of the Deer Park VFW Post 10077, and a founding, charter and honorary member of the Aurora Fire Department, started in 1961, where he served as chief for many years. Dayton worked with the Special Olympics of Maryland, through the American Legion, for 30 years and received several awards and certificates including a special honor from the late Eunice Kennedy Shriver. He is survived by his wife, Dorothy R. (Shahan) Alexander; two sons, Michael E. Alexander of Andover, OH and J. Eric Alexander of Aurora; one daughter, Sue Watts and husband Wayne of Aurora; four grandchildren, Bryan Watts and wife Rose of Aurora, Shad Green and wife Nikki of Aurora, Becky Michaels and husband Robby of Oakland, and Trevor Alexander of Aurora; great-grandchildren, Tyler Michaels, Amber Watts, Michaela and Kirsten Green; two brothers, Robert B. Alexander and Howard G. Alexander of Smithsburg; four sisters, Gladys G. Flesher of Grafton, WV, Norma J. Gallagher of Morgantown, WV, F. Juanita Shaffer of Mt. Lake Park and Charlotte M. Boggs of Smithsburg; and a number of nieces and nephews including a special nephew, Wayne Alexander. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Phyllis R. (Green) Williams; a daughter-in-law, Jutta Alexander; one brother, Russell B. Alexander; and three sisters, Freda (Jamison) Stout, Mary L. Rose and Winona R. Alexander. Friends will be received at the Burdock-Fredlock Funeral Home, P.A., 21 N 2nd St., Oakland from 1 to 5 PM on Saturday, December 22nd. A funeral service will be held in the funeral home on Sunday, December 23rd at 1 PM with Rev. Scott Rush officiating. Interment will follow in Pleasant Valley Cemetery, Oakland with full military honors accorded by the American Legion and VFW combined honor guard. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Aurora Fire Department, 25781 George Washington Hwy., Aurora, WV 25781.
