He was a proud graduate of Miami University in Oxford, Ohio and a veteran of the United States Air National Guard. On August 24, 1963, he married Judith A. Krumm, his loving partner for life. Following retirement from the university, he continued to pursue careers in both real estate and financial planning until 1997 when he and Judy moved to Garrett County. David was a faithful member of St. Mark's Lutheran Church, Oakland. He volunteered for a number of community organizations, particularly enjoying the designing and building of stage sets for Our Town Theatre Productions. He loved cycling with his wife and "Chain Gang" friends and was an avid sailor since the age of 7, ultimately becoming a Certified US Sailing Instructor for the Deep Creek Sailing School and serving on their Board. In addition, David served as Past Commodore and on various committees of the Deep Creek Yacht Club at Turkey Neck. His passion for sailing and competitive spirit at the helm of his Flying Scot were apparent to all his friends in the Deep Creek Yacht Racing Association. He is survived by his wife, Judy Bertsch; two sons, Brian David Bertsch and wife Elizabeth of Delaware, OH and Eric Whitney Bertsch and wife J.C. of Jacksonville, FL; two grandchildren, Jacklyn and Shannon Bertsch; a brother, John T.
