Darl Friend

Darl Z. Friend, 87, of Mt. Lake Park died on Tuesday, February 18, 2014 at the Oakland Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. Born on May 17, 1926 in Wheeling, WV, he was the son of the late Richard Earl and Alice D. (Casteel) Friend. He had worked as a coal miner, a construction worker and for the county roads department. Darl was a member of the Crellin Assembly of God. Known as "Black Panther" on the airwaves, he was an avid CB radio operator. He is survived by his wife, Ethel Mae (Kirk) Friend; two sons, Kenneth D. Friend and wife Florence of Corinth, WV and Matthew D. Friend of TN; two daughters, Linda S. Huffman and husband Arden of Harmon, WV and Patty L. Johnson and husband Jim of Shawsville, VA; a stepson, Wayne Soult of NC; a number of grandchildren and great grandchildren; two sisters, Alice and Lou; and a number of nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, an infant Roger D. and Clyde; and three sisters, Alta, Olive and Jane. Friends will be received at the Burdock-Fredlock Funeral Home, P.A., 21 N 2nd St., Oakland on Friday, February 21st from 6 to 8 PM and on Saturday, February 22nd from 9 to 10 AM at which time a funeral service will be held. Interment will be in the Ashby Cemetery, Crellin.
