Clinton Englander

Clinton Wayne Englander, longtime Oakland civic and business leader, died at home on October 30, 2012, at the age of 94. Born on October 8, 1918 in Cleveland, OH, he was the son of the late Hazel (White) and Bernard Englander. He was a graduate of Wayne State University where he earned his degree in Pharmacy. He served in World War II in the U.S. Marine Corps as an Aviation Cadet and transferred to USNR as a Sonar Officer serving in the Pacific Theater. He attained the rank of Lt. Commander. He married Jean Jackson of Lonaconing in 1944 and they settled in Oakland where he established Englander's Pharmacy. Following the death of his wife in 1958, he married Ann Lawrence Lawton of Oakland in 1963. He played a leading role in serving the community through important work in multiple civic organizations. He was President of Garrett County Hospice and the Maryland State PTA. He served on the Oakland Town Council, Garrett County Arts Council, Southern Garrett Rescue Squad, the vestry of St. Matthew's Church and was active in the Garrett County Democratic Party. In addition, he was a member of the Deep Creek Yacht Club, the American Legion Proctor Kildow Post #71 and the Garrett County Choral Society. He was honored as Maryland Pharmacist of the Year. He was a driving force in the creation of WMSG Radio Station in Oakland as well as being a founding investor in Marsh Mountain (now WISP ski area). One of his greatest accomplishments was being one of the founders of both Garrett College and Hospice of Garrett County. An avid alpine and nordic skier, he also was passionate about competitive sailing, SCUBA diving, biking and swimming. He spent a lifetime expanding his mind through travel as well as Garrett College classes, especially in literature and the arts. He became an accomplished painter and played classical guitar. He was preceded in death by his first wife and is survived by his wife, Ann Englander; his children, Margaret Englander of San Francisco, Marilyn Englander of San Rafael CA, Clair Englander of Vashon WA, Barbara Englander of Oakland and Wayne Englander of Portland OR; two stepdaughters, Carol Lawton of Appleton WI and Deborah Scheuber Lawton of Turgi, Switzerland; the respective spouses and partners of all the children; nieces, Laura Stutzmann of Mt. Lake Park and Janet Jackson Butts of Moorefield, WV; and six grandchildren, Khobi Brooklyn, Benjamin Karnow, Jean Karnow, Avio Brooklyn, Annie Robinson and Lupita Englander. Friends will be received at the Burdock-Fredlock Funeral Home, P.A., 21 N. 2nd St., Oakland on Friday, November 2nd from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 PM. A funeral service will be held on Saturday, November 3rd at 11 AM in St. Matthew's Episcopal Church, 2nd and Liberty Streets, Oakland. A private interment will follow in Oakland Cemetery. A celebration of his life is planned for the summer of 2013.
