Claude Beckman, 87, of Mt. Lake Park, MD, died Saturday, August 27, 2011 at Garrett Memorial Hospital. Born on March 8, 1924, in Oakland, MD, he was the son of the late Walter and Leona (Shaffer) Beckman. He was married to the late Almeda "Bun" Ellen (Murphy) Beckman. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Sally Hardesty; a son in law, George "Porge" Sweitzer, Jr.; and a granddaughter, Katelyn Sweitzer; three brothers and three sisters.
Claude was retired from the B&O Railroad as a heavy equipment operator. He was a proud Army veteran of WWII, a member of the Deer Park VFW and the Oakland American Legion Post. He was also a life member of the Deer Park Sportsmen's Club.
He is survived by two sons, James and Brenda Beckman of Corinth, WV and Wayne and Janie Beckman of Oakland; six daughters, Leona Sweitzer of Kitzmiller, Judy Sweitzer and husband Dave of Oakland, Mary Simms and husband Jim of Mt. Lake Park, Sue Wolf and husband Lee of Swanton, Donna Tasker and husband D.L. of Parsons, WV, and Barbie Beckman of Oakland; also 17 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren.
Friends will be received at the Apostolics of Oakland Church, 600 Spruce St., Mt. Lake Park on Tuesday from 6-8 p.m. and Wednesday from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Services will be held on Thursday at 11 a.m. at the Apostolics of Oakland Church with the Reverend Aaron Phillips officiating. Interment will be in the Deer Park Cemetery where military honors will be accorded. Expressions of sympathy may take the form of contributions to the Apostolics of Oakland Church, 600 Spruce St., Mt.
