Carrie Elizabeth (Murphy) Benson, 80, of Oakland passed away on Wednesday, June 18, 2014 at the Oakland Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, surrounded by her loved ones. Born on October 19, 1933 near Terra Alta, WV, she was the daughter of the late William and Lucy (Bowman) Murphy. She had retired from Garrett Memorial Hospital after 30 years of service. Carrie was a member of the Terra Alta Moose Lodge #1395, an active supporter of the Garrett County Historical Society and other local charities. She loved traveling, baking, gardening, spending time with her family, and reminiscing with her siblings about growing up in Turner Douglas. She is survived by her daughters, Cathy Helbig and husband Gene of Oakland, Sharon Fulk of Oakland, Rebecca Baird and husband Michael of Crofton; sons, Charly Ahern and wife Debbie of Accident and Michael Ahern and wife Nancy of Indian Head; a stepdaughter, Laura Benson Hartley of Oakland; grandchildren, upon whom she doted, Vicki Matthews, Justin Helbig, Katie Couch, Jessie Davis, Rachel Davis, Nicholas, Michael and Olivia Ahern, and Emily and Abigail Baird; beloved great grandchildren, Megan and Seth Matthews and Grace, Gavin and Miles Helbig; and a sister and brother, Dolly Moats and Harley Murphy, both of Terra Alta. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Dan Benson; brothers, Leroy, James and Allen Murphy; sisters, Helen Whetsell, Susie Powell, Wilma Baker and Nellie Poland; and a great-grandson, Jackson Helbig. Friends will be received at the Burdock-Fredlock Funeral Home, P.A., 21 N 2nd St., Oakland on Friday, June 20th from 5 to 8 PM. A funeral service will be held in the funeral home on Saturday, June 21st at 11 AM. Interment will follow in the Garrett County Memorial Gardens. Donations in memory of Carrie may be sent to the CARC I Can Swim Program, Garrett College Foundation, 687 Mosser Road, McHenry, MD 21541.
