Dr. Bowie Linn Grant, 90, of Oakland passed away on June 26, 2015 at Garrett County Memorial Hospital following a brief illness. Linn as he was known, was born on April 13, 1925 in Oakland and was a son of the late Dr. William W. & Patience Bruce (Williams) Grant. He was a 1942 graduate of Oakland High School, 1944 graduate of Potomac State College and 1948 graduate of University of Maryland Medical School, under the accelerated program then in place for World War II. Following his graduation from medical school, he interned at West Baltimore General. In 1950 he elected to go into private practice in Shadyside, Maryland, since the war had ended. After a few years of practice, the lure of service was strong enough that he decided to enlist in the United States Air Force, where he continued to serve as a flight surgeon. He was stationed at Wheelus Air Force Base in Tripoli, Libya; Hahn Air Force Base in Germany and Westover Air Force Base in Massachusetts. He selflessly decided to leave the Air Force, and put down roots and establish a stable environment for his young family. Upon his departure, he had attained the rank of Major and had numerous citations. Returning to Oakland in 1960, he opened a private practice and serviced the medical needs of his patients for the next twenty-five years before retiring in 1985. Linn continued to be active after his retirement serving as a director of the First United Bank & Trust until his retirement from that board at age 72. He also worked as a realtor for A & S Realty for a number of years. He was a member of the Oakland-Mt. Lake Park Lions Club, a 50 year plus Mason in the Oakland Lodge #192 AF & AM and a member of the Royal Order of Jesters. He is survived by his wife Joyce (Wagoner) Grant; a daughter, Elizabeth M. Grant; sons, Bowie Linn Grant, Jr. and William B. Grant; eight grandchildren; four great grandchildren; a stepson, Joe Foley; two step daughters, Brenda Foley and Connie Baseler; and two step grandchildren. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Anne (Naylor) Grant in 1999 and by his eldest son, Townshend Naylor Grant in 1991. Family and friends will be received at the C & S Fredlock Funeral Home, P.A., 21 N 2nd St., Oakland on Sunday, June 28th from 6 to 8 PM. A funeral service will be held Monday, June 29th at 10 AM at St. Matthews Episcopal Church with the Rev. Dr. Chip Lee officiating. Interment, with military honors, will follow in the Oakland Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to St. Matthew's Episcopal Church, 126 E. Liberty St., Oakland, MD 21550, Ruth Enlow Library, 6 N. 2nd St., Oakland, MD 21550 or Garrett County Memorial Hospital Foundation, 251 N. 4th St., Oakland, MD 21550.
