Beverly Joan (Waybright) Cardaro, 86, of Strasburg, Va, formerly of Newport News, VA, died on Tuesday, November 15, 2022, at Lynn Care Center, Front Royal, VA. She was born on November 29, 1935, in Nethken, WV and was the daughter of the late Arthur Hobart and Ruth Virginia (Barnes) Waybright.
A coal miner's daughter, Beverly was the youngest of seven and was doted on by her family, especially her father. She was considered pretty and popular in school, but she was particularly proud of being in the choir. Beverly loved singing, and later, would participate in community opera, snagging roles in Madame Butterfly and La Boheme. Her range was quite varied and she could do everything from singing soprano to yodeling.
At her high school graduation party, Beverly met a friend of a friend, the man she would later marry and spend 68 years with, Charles Cardaro. The two of them would leave the Holler and embark on an exciting adventure traveling with their two children. Her husband's career in the Aerospace Industry and later, the Nuclear Naval Shipbuilding Industry, had them residing in several different cities throughout the south and western United States. Eventually, the family would settle in Newport News, where Beverly would finally realize her dream of becoming a licensed cosmetologist. Prior to that, she would practice on her daughter and even had a wig styling business. Her children recall a house filled with foam heads.
Beverly was a redheaded dynamo. She had a big personality and always commanded the room, regardless of who the audience was. Beverly loved being a hairdresser and the social interaction that afforded her, something she did for more than 50 years. She had a wide smile, an infectious laugh and never met a person she didn't want to talk to. Beverly was known for having a wicked sense of humor and saying exactly what she thought. Her favorite quote was "Well-behaved women rarely make history" by Eleanor Roosevelt. Beverly put it on a necklace she wore often and with great pride.
She had a huge heart and made friends wherever she went. Beverly and her husband were active members of St. Jerome Catholic Church, in Newport News, for nearly 50 years. She will be sadly missed by her family, as well as her numerous nieces, nephews, and friends.
Beverly is survived by her husband, Charles Mark Cardaro; her children, Lance Cardaro and wife Pam of Strasburg, VA and Vickie Cardaro of NYC and Shelter Island, New York.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her grandson, Charles Douglas Cardaro, and siblings, Dennis Waybright, Robert Waybright, Elliot Waybright, Billy Waybright, Ronald Waybright and Myrtle Kitzmiller.
Friends will be received on Saturday, December 3, 2022 from 11 AM to 12 noon at Nethken Hill United Methodist Church, 658 Nethken Hill Road, Elk Garden, WV. A funeral service will follow with Reverend Dr. Matthew Paugh officiating.
Interment will be in the Kalbaugh Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Nethken Hill United Methodist Church memorial fund.
