Betty Lee (Lewis) Croston went home to be with the Lord together with her husband, James Oliver Croston. Born in Frostburg on September 25, 1937, she was the daughter of the late John W. and Sylvia E. (Cost) Lewis. Betty was a graduate of Beall High School Class of 1955 and attended Memorial Hospital School of Nursing and Allegany College in Cumberland. She was employed by the Allegany County Board of Education at Cash Valley Road and Barton Elementary Schools, working with special needs children. She married the love of her life, James Oliver Croston, on July 25, 1956 in Annapolis, MD. Betty was a dedicated volunteer at the Garrett Regional Medical Center in Oakland. She volunteered for over 25 years with Volunteers in Various Areas (VIVA) and for over 20 years with the Loar Auxiliary where she served as cashier and assistant buyer. Betty was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, a former member of Frostburg United Methodist Church and a current member of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church where she participated in the United Methodist Women and Ruth Circle. She had served as a representative to the Annual Conference, co-op parish and other various committees. Betty was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother. She enjoyed painting ceramics, cruising and reading was a lifelong passion.
Betty is survived by a daughter, Denise L. Shay and husband James of Mtn. Lake Park; a son, James O. Croston, Jr. and wife Susan of Sand Springs, OK; grandchildren, John E. Brodbeck, Jr. of Mtn. Lake Park, Stephanie N. Slaubaugh and husband Mick of Eglon, WV, James R. Shay, II and wife Michelle of Elk Garden, Kaitlyn J. Croston and Connor J. Croston, both of Tulsa OK; great grandchildren, Britani Seabold of Cumberland, Zachary Shay and Wyatt Shay, both of Oakland; a sister, Carol S. Ogg and husband Dennis of Ocala, FL; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Friends will be received at the C & S Fredlock Funeral Home, P.A., 21 N 2nd St., Oakland on Friday, March 1, 2019, from 3 to 7 PM and on Saturday, March 2, 2019, at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, 318 E. Oak St., Oakland from 9 to 10 AM after which time a funeral service will be held with the Rev. Matthew Paugh officiating. Interment will be in the Frostburg Memorial Gardens. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Paul’s United Methodist Church.
