Betty Cogan

Betty Louise (Shaffer) Cogan, 74, died on Friday, November 16, 2012, with her daughter by her side, after suffering for 14 years with Alzheimer's disease. Born on October 12, 1938 in Oakland, she was the daughter of the late Charles Denver and Okareda (Junkins) Shaffer. Having always worked hard, she started her career in bookkeeping at Peter's Fuel Company and worked at Teet's General Store followed by the Oakland Unemployment Office. After relocating to Belair, for her husband's work, she began working at the Jobs Corp in Aberdeen. Betty Lou enjoyed boating, walking, cleaning and cooking. She also enjoyed traveling overseas and had a lived for a time in Saudi Arabia. Most of all, she enjoyed spending time with family and friends. She is survived by sons, Wellington Jack Sowers, Jr. and wife Cyndee of Mercersburg, PA and Jay Sowers and wife Nanette of Terra Alta, WV; daughter, Leslee (Sowers) Keeney and husband Randall of Middletown; grandchildren by whom she will be sadly missed, Jack Daniel Sowers and wife Tammy of Mercersburg, PA, Cindy Beach of Greencastle, PA, Steven Sowers of Mercersburg, PA, Bradley Sowers of Terra Alta, WV, Lacee (Sowers) Fogle and husband Nick of Myersville and Nicholas Tressler of Frostburg; step-grandson, Chad Webster and wife Lauren of Morgantown, WV; great grandchildren, Keagan Sowers, Camden Sowers, Lilla Beach and Bryson Fogle; and brothers, Dennis Shaffer and wife Cheryl and Rocky Shaffer and wife Pam, all of Oakland. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her beloved husband, David Cogan. Friends will be received at the Burdock-Fredlock Funeral Home, P.A., 21 N 2nd St., Oakland on Monday, November 19th from 6 to 9 PM and on Tuesday, November 20th from 10 to 11 AM at which time a funeral service will be held with Rev. Donald Matthews officiating. Interment will follow in Oakland Cemetery. Donations may be made in memory of Betty Lou Cogan to the Alzheimer's Association National Office, 225 N. Michigan Ave., Floor 17, Chicago, IL 60601.
