Berdena Hesse

Berdena Avenell Hesse, 88, of Swanton, passed away at her home on Thursday, September 27, 2018 surrounded by her family.  Born on December 9, 1929, in Eglon, WV, she was the daughter of the late Nelson and Carrie (Lantz) Harsh.  Berdena attended Eglon Elementary and Aurora High Schools.  She was dedicated farm wife and worked beside her husband Richard on their family farm.  Berdena was a faithful member of Gortner Union Church where she and Richard served as Deaconess and Deacon for many years.  She enjoyed gospel music and loved singing.  Berdena served as President of Gortner Ladies Aid for several years.  Her hobbies included gardening, sewing and quilting.  Berdena is survived by her daughter Ruth Ann Beckman and husband Marvin of Swanton; and numerous nieces and nephews.  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, Richard John Hesse; a sister, Idella Rumer; five brothers, Artenis Harsh, Wilmer Harsh, Melvin Harsh, Ernest Harsh and Jesse Harsh.  Friends will be received at the C & S Fredlock Funeral Home, P.A., 21 N 2ndSt., Oakland on Friday, September 28 from 4-7 PM. A funeral service will be held at Gortner Union Church on Saturday, September 29 at 11 AM with Pastors Lewis Beachy and Ryan Heycock officiating.  Interment will be held in Eglon Cemetery.  Memorial contributions may be made to the Gortner Union Church 13180-F Garrett Hwy PMB201, Oakland, MD 21550.  www.csfredlockfh.com
