Barbara Heilig

Barbara Ann (Wilt) Heilig, 64, of Swanton, died on Monday, October 24, 2016 at the Garrett Regional Medical Center. Born on February 29, 1952, in Garrett County, MD, she was the daughter of the late Lawrence Edward and Mamie Viola (Bowman) Wilt. Barbara was a graduate of Southern High School and a member of the first graduating class of Garrett College. She continued her education at Frostburg State University where she earned a Master's degree in education. Barbara began her teaching career in Bruceton Mills, WV. She joined the teaching staff at Broad Ford Elementary School in 1979 where she taught third grade until 2016. Barbara's passion was teaching. She was always learning, taking workshops, striving to better herself and improve the learning experience for the students in her classroom. Barbara was an organizer who coordinated family events. She was the caretaker of everyone and her family was her life. Barbara enjoyed reading, gardening, spending time outdoors and traveling. She was a member of the Oak Park Church of the Brethren. Barbara is survived by her daughters, Lauren and Sarah Heilig of Swanton; her siblings, Brenda Pike and husband Fred of Swanton, Larry Wilt and wife Lenora, Beverly Haines and husband Jeffery, Bonnie Miller and husband Danny, George Wilt, Bobby Wilt and wife Stacy, all of Oakland; numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins; a special cousin, who was like a sister, Susan Bowman; special friends, Barbara Ponceroff and Jennifer Rohrbaugh; and the countless number of students who passed through her classroom over the past 40 years. Friends will be received at the Oak Park Church of the Brethren on Saturday, October 29, 2016 from 5-8:00 PM. A memorial service will be held in the church on Sunday, October 30, 2016 at 2:00 PM with Pastor Carl Fike officiating. Arrangements have been entrusted to the C & S FREDLOCK FUNERAL HOME, P.A., Oakland.
