Arnold E. “Sonny” Geer, 84, of Kitzmiller, MD, formerly of Braceville, OH, passed away on Friday, January 19, 2018 at the Garrett Regional Medical Center. Born on January 26, 1933 in Durango, CO, he was the son of the late Chester E. and Emma (Cutler) Chappell. Sonny was a 1952 graduate of Howland High School. He proudly served in the United States Army during the Korean War. Upon returning to Ohio, Sonny resumed his position at Copperweld Steel Company where he was known as “Cowboy.” Proud of his Colorado heritage, Sonny was seldom seen without his trademark cowboy hat and boots. He retired from the mill after working over 30 years where he was a member of the United Steelworkers of America, Local #1375. Sonny had a real sense for adventure. He built his first motorcycle and rode it between Ohio and Maryland to court his future wife. He shared his adventures with his family traveling to 44 states thoughout the years. He was famous for his carvings, crafting and building his family retreat off of Short Run Road, Kitzmiller fondly known as “the Cabin.” Sonny shared his passion for dancing, playing cards and bowling with his family. After retirement, Sonny and Janet spent 13 winters in Big Pine Key, FL where he loved to fish. Locally, Sonny was a member of Mt. Bethel United Methodist Church in Kitzmiller. Sonny had a larger than life fun spirit and a deep love for his family and for those reasons he will be greatly missed. Sonny is survived by his bride of 61 years, Janet R. (Wilson) Geer; his children, Ron Geer and wife Kay of Rochelle, VA, Larry Geer and wife Theresa of Kitzmiller, Arnette Badanjek and husband Bill of Southington, OH, Wayne Geer and wife Jennifer of Canton, OH; grandchildren, Josh Geer and wife Jeannine, Phil Geer and wife Samantha, Rachel Roberts and husband Brandon, Cari Helbig and husband Dan, Trina Badanjek and significant other James Eckenrod, Billy Badanjek and wife Christine, Matt Badanjek, Stephanie Swogger and Jenny Geer; great grandchildren, Brett, Alycea, Jacob, Shelby, James Jr., MacKenzie, Christian and Madison; siblings, Barbara Keller, Nelma Jones and husband Michael, JoAnn Kemphfer and husband Bill. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Eleanor Redmond. In accordance with Sonny’s wishes, he will be cremated and a memorial service will be held at a later date.
