Alta Friend

Alta Genevieve (Reckart) Friend, 97, of Oakland, died on Wednesday, January 25, 2017, at Oakland Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. Born on April 10, 1919, in Cuzzart, WV, she was the daughter of the late Jonathan L. and Ida M. (Livengood) Reckart. She was a retired cafeteria worker at Southern High School having given over 40 years of service. She enjoyed working there and grew very close to all the students she served and thought of many as her own children. She was an excellent baker and cook and enjoyed doing it for her family and friends. Alta is survived by a daughter, Annis Rae Colaw; three sons, Darvin Paul Friend and wife Eleanor, Richard Eugene Friend and wife Betty and Michael Lee Friend, all of Oakland; eight grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; seven step great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Arnold Friend, in 1963; a grandson, Bill Ravenscroft; and a son-in-law, Fred Colaw. She was the last surviving member of her family. Friends will be received at the C & S FREDLOCK FUNERAL HOME, P.A., 21 N 2ND St., Oakland, on Friday, January 27th from 5 to 8 PM and on Saturday, January 28th from 10 to 11 AM after which time a funeral service will be held. Interment will follow in the Blooming Rose Cemetery, Friendsville. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Cindy's Fund, PO Box 182, Oakland, MD 21550.
