Ada Louise Ford Maffett, 97, of Oakland passed away peacefully on Saturday, February 4, 2023 at Cherry Hill Assisted Living in Accident, MD.
Ada was preceded in death by her parents, Mary Louise (Felton) Ford and Chester G. Ford; her brother, Sgt. Robert Felton Ford (USMC); her beloved husband of 63 years, Hugh F. "Jay" Maffett; and one miscarried child.
She is survived by her children, Kristine L. Maffett Fay and husband Michael, Wayne J. Maffett, Ellen L. Maffett Allen, Janet L. Maffett Gregory and husband Jeff, and Carol L Maffett and husband Richard Dale; seven grandchildren, Amanda Klotz, Hon. Justin Gregory, Jeffrey Gregory, Eric Allen, James Allen, Felicia Marple and CJ Marple; nine great grandchildren, Mariah, Haley and Timmy Klotz, Easton, Summer and Copeland Allen, Braylon and Waylon Marple, Boone Gregory; and one bonus great grandchild, Lucas Lambert.
Ada was born in Cumberland, Maryland on July 11, 1925, and was baptized and confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church in Cumberland. She was a proud Lutheran all her life, including at Zion Lutheran in Accident and more recently as a long-time member of St Mark's in Oakland. She was also a life-long supporter and a member of the 4-H clubs and received many awards for her 4-H work and leadership in Allegany County.
Ada launched a career following high school, working for the C&P telephone company in both Cumberland and Oakland, until her family outgrew her career. She took up support of her children's education and extracurricular activities and served in many capacities in local PTAs and as President of the Southern Band Boosters. She supported the church in many capacities, including organizing nearly every type of food event and as the chair of the linens committee for years. She was an avid gardener and also served as a judge in many categories at the Garrett County Fair. One of her great pleasures was seeing her grandchildren and great grandchildren's many successes.
Ada's wish, like her husband before her, was that her remains be donated to the Medical School at West Virginia University.
A memorial service will be held at St. Mark's Lutheran Church on March 25, 2023, at 11 AM with Pastor Tom Omholt and Vicar Carrie Hoff officiating. Friends will be received for one hour prior to the service.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be directed to St Mark's Lutheran Church, the Southern Garrett Rescue Squad, Garrett County Hospice or to a charity of your choice.
